Growing up in the South, the Fashion No No of white after Labor Day has always been drilled into my brain. As this Labor Day approaches I began seeing more and more articles dispelling this Fashion myth and decided to investigate why this rule was ever even a rule?! It turns out that the rule actually originated back in the late 1800s when wealthy city dwellers would come to the East Coast to vacation in resorts along the coastline. White was the color of choice FOR those who could afford to spend their summers in these lavish resorts. When summer ended and they returned to their City life, so did their wardrobe, marking the end of summer. Like so many "silly" rules out there, this one continued thru the years, never being questioned, only accepted as another page in the Fashion Handbook.
With all that being said, it's both refreshing and honestly a bit out of my shell to welcome white into my color pallette for Fall! The key to keeping this clean, fresh color in your Fall wardrobe is to mix it with those staple colors this fall (think Jewel tones, animal prints & boots!) & to keep the fabric in mind. Denims & other heavier fabrics mark Fall's arrival (ie denim & poly-blend blazers or sweaters), while those thin white tanks & sheer dresses may be better tucked away until Summer season arrives. A recent article by the Baltimore Sun quotes, White is no longer seasonal," said Florence Sokol, owner of Jones & Jones. "It can be worn all year round. It's the new black." Marc Jacobs, as well as other designers, are welcoming white into their runway styles for fall from apparel to accessories. Thus stating that white after Labor Day this season is not only accepted, it is considered Fashion Forward!
So...before you pack away all that is white, keep around those fabrics that can transition to fall & save a few bucks in the process! It's always the purchases that will work year round that are worth the money!!
